Job summary

Location: Remote — South Dakota-based or SD-familiar candidates strongly preferred
Employment Type: Full-time, Contract (W-2 or 1099)
Experience Level: Mid-level (3–5 years)
Engagement: Supports a proposed South Dakota Department of Health data initiative (Rural Health Data Atlas)

  • Fully remote, full-time role (~40 hours/week); availability during Central Time business hours preferred.
  • Occasional travel to Pierre, SD (roughly twice a year) for in-person planning sessions — travel expenses reimbursed at state per diem rates.
  • Engagement structure is flexible — W-2 employee or 1099/contract — consistent with Graphable’s federated talent model.
  • This is a U.S.-based role; it cannot be performed offshore.
  • Selected candidates must be able to pass a fingerprint-based background check, required for access to protected health data.

Graphable is assembling a team to support South Dakota’s Rural Health Data Atlas — a state-led initiative that brings health data from across South Dakota into one accessible, easy-to-use platform. We’re seeking a Public Health Informatician to lead the planning and technical groundwork that moves data from existing state systems into this new, cloud-based platform. This is a long-term, full-time engagement, and we’re building our bench of qualified South Dakota informatics talent now.

Responsibilities
  • Lead planning for how public health data moves from current state systems and enterprise repositories into the new statewide analytics platform, including related data modernization activities.
  • Support the development and maintenance of new data feeds from existing state agency data sources and information systems.
  • Support data governance work — metadata, data integration, and data quality — across multiple state agency data sources.
  • Help identify a migration strategy for optionally transitioning existing Power BI and Tableau dashboards onto the new platform.
  • Apply knowledge of data exchange protocols to keep information moving reliably between systems.
  • Monitor and resolve technical issues affecting the flow of data feeding the platform.
Experience and Skills Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, or a related field — or a Master’s degree in Public Health with a concentration in Public Health Informatics.
  • Experience with SQL, Python, JavaScript, or Azure data services (Databricks, Azure Data Factory, Synapse, Cosmos DB).
  • Working knowledge of clinical/health data coding standards such as HL7, LOINC, SNOMED, ICD-10, and CPT.
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills.
  • At least 2 years of experience in a public health setting (state/local health departments, Tribal health programs, federally qualified health centers, public health labs, community health organizations, or academic/research institutions doing population-level health work).
Nice to Have
  • South Dakota residency, or strong familiarity with the state and its rural/Tribal health landscape.
  • 3–5 years of overall informatics, data engineering, or health IT experience.
  • Prior experience with health information exchanges or public health data modernization projects.
